Mentoring

Northport Public School has a Secondary Mentoring Program available to any 6th-12th grade student. The purpose of this program is to help students and community members foster meaningful relationships to ensure that every child has as many trusted adults in their lives as possible. Research has shown time and time again, “that supportive relationships with adults are important for personal, emotional, cognitive, and psychological growth” (Does Mentoring Matter? A Multidisciplinary Meta-Analysis Comparing Mentored and Non-Mentored Individuals, 2008). Please note that this will not be academic tutoring or counseling - just humans connecting with humans.

What does mentoring look like?

  • 1-on-1 meeting between mentor and mentee
  • 1x/week
  • 15 minutes
  • On campus only

Mentor/mentee matches are thoughtfully considered based on a variety of mentor/mentee preferences and interests collected via the Mentor Application and a Student Interest Survey. Mentor applications are screened by the Program Coordinator. After the application, mentors undergo a background check and in-person training before being matched with a mentee. Once mentoring begins, the Program Coordinators will provide on-going check-ins with both the mentor and mentee to offer support and/or monitor the need for any additional training.
