National Honor Society

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become a member of the National Honor Society?
Eligible students are invited to apply to NHS based on the pillar of Scholarship. All students who maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 and have completed grades 9, 10, or 11 are invited to apply. This DOES NOT guarantee admission to NHS. All applications are reviewed by the Faculty Council. Students who meet the criteria, as determined by the faculty council, for all other pillars of service are admitted to NHS.

What are the requirements to maintain membership?
NHS members must uphold the pillars of service at all times. Students are also expected to attend NHS meetings and participate in Northport Chapter Service Projects. In addition, NHS students must complete fifteen volunteer/service hours, outside of chapter events, throughout the school year. Finally, NHS members are also required to plan and organize their own Individual Service Project throughout the school year.

How often are new members admitted?
In order to calculate an accurate cumulative grade, applications are sent out at the completion of the semester. In the event of a fall admittance, end of the year grades from the previous school year will be used to determine scholarship eligibility

Who do I talk to if I have questions about the application process and/or the organization?
Mr. Fryer is the NHS advisor. Advisors are non-voting members of the Faculty Council, so they are available to help with applications and/or just to answer general questions.
