Projects at Home from EL Education:
Looking for cool projects that can engage students at home and support academic learning at the same time? These are from the developer of our ELA curriculum (a free account may need to be created).
Northport Public School’s long history of student-led community-based projects begins another leg of that journey with its award of $6000 from Students to Stewards Initiative.
NPS is one of six public schools across the State awarded a grant from Students to Stewards, a collaboration between the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), Michigan Department of Education (MDE), and the MiSTEM Network (Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity) at Grand Valley State University.
NPS is partnering with local agencies including the Grand Traverse Lighthouse, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, and Inland Seas Educational Association to provide students a focused study of watersheds and sturgeon habitat in our region, as well as careers in natural resource management.
From Students to Stewards will emphasize using place-based approaches and real-world experiences to engage students and prepare them for high-quality water-focused STEM careers. Participating schools will integrate Great Lakes and freshwater literacy principles into standards-based school curricula and continuous improvement plans.
